Joey Gage is a book artist, photographer, and multimedia artist currently based in Los Angeles and is originally from Coatesville, Pennsylvania. Most of their recent work takes the form of artist’s books that elaborate on the physical form and limitations of the book. While Gage’s portfolio of artist’s books have included accordions, French doors, and German cases, their books have been realized as clothing, mirrors, and sound. Thematically, Gage places gender, the human body, and the natural world as focal points in their work.

Gage has worked at multiple institutions that promote the creation of new artist’s books and preserve historic works including The Bancroft Library at UC Berkeley and San Francisco Center for the Book. They have also worked with Julie Chen at Flying Fish Press as a special projects studio assistant having aided in the production of ‘Book of Hours’ and ‘The Accretion of Identity’.

In 2019, Gage completed their Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Photography and Imaging from Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. Most recently, Gage received their Master of Fine Arts in Book Art from Mills College in 2022. Their solo thesis exhibition, which was shown at Aggregate Space Gallery in Oakland, CA, awarded them the Excellence in Book Art Award from the Center for the Book. Gage was the final recipient of the MFA degree in Book Art from Mills College. Gage’s books can be found in collections such as MIT, UC Berkeley, and Yale University.
